Post Conference Survey Results

First a few numbers to put it in perspective:

  • 100 people responded to the feedback survey, which represents about 2/3 of those in attendance
  • Speakers were rated on a number of factors, and ratings could range from Poor to Excellent, or 1-5 in numberical terms. Of 19 speakers, including our keynotes, 10 of them had average overall ratings in excess of 4 out of 5 – that is –better than "Very Good".
  • 45% of our respondents were attending their first POC conference
  • Of the 55% who were returning conference attendees, 40% have attended 3 or more POC Conferences
  • 35% of those responding have been in business as an organizer for 1-3 years, and another 29% for 4-6 years.
  • Geographically, 63% were from Southern Ontario (that is, probably within driving distance!) but another 16% were from the west (Manitoba out to BC).
  • 65% of those responding said they were "very likely" or "somewhat likely" to attend the 2007 Conference in beautiful Vancouver!

Now here are a few selected comments – from the many hundreds received. The whole document is 93 pages, so we are just giving you a few of our favorite excerpts!

Re: Hotel Facilities

"Yes, I love having downtown hotels where those of us that are from out-of-town have easy access to entertainment and restaurants that the host city provides. It's well-worth the extra cost that may be involved. I was able to enjoy several nearby restaurants (Wayne Gretzky's and others) as well as two shows that were in town (Legends and Blue Man Group). I love having this type of opportunity because I work so hard during the year that having conference in a vibrant downtown location nearby entertainment is like icing on the cake! Thank you!"

"I much prefer a downtown location. I don't want to fly half way across the country to stay near an airport. There's not much time to go out, but for the few opportunities before, during and after the conference, I'd much rather be downtown to explore the city. The HIOK facilities were a 3/5 for me. The locations of meeting rooms, elevators, lobby, etc was a bit confusing, it took a few days to figure it out. The food was mediocre. The staff was great. Liked the free internet and computer access which allowed me to update and print relevant items."

About the conference format:

"Each year that I attend the conference I come home more inspired! It is great to get together with other organizers, however, I wish we had a bit more time to chat. I know that even personally, I am trying to take in so much information, that I seem to be rushing around. Also, it is a fine balance between the number of session as some people can take them in back to back, but personally, I find it a bit overwhelming, especially by the second afternoon. It's great to learn, but it's great to meet and network too! A hard balance to achieve for the most seasoned conference planner. Having worked on conference planning, I can recognize how much hard work, time, planning, etc. goes into such an event and I applaud all of you for a terrific job overall. I do so appreciate all of your hard work!"

"I would say that it's practically mandatory for a person starting out to attend a conference of this sort. I learned so much, and met so many wonderful people that I will have no trouble staying in touch with. The binder and handouts were terrific - I especially liked having the seminar notes in the binder. And being able to purchase tapes of the seminars that I missed is a bonus as well."

"My head was spinning with information, and I thought, "Wow, there was soooo much to go to and to digest." Having said that, I think if we had more free time, some may think it was a waste of time. I am completely satisfied with getting saturated with information. That's what we were paying for, right?"

Re: What were your over all thoughts about conference – was it a good use of your time

(Note: there were 86 responses to this question, of which only 6 were even slightly negative!)

"EXCELLENT! It was definitely a great use of my time and money. And absolutely the education and networking will continue to push me to be an excellent PO and also a better person. The business will only thrive on this."

"I thought this was a great use of my time. I am definitely planning on attending in Vancouver. I made the most of my time networking and have met some really great contacts. Everyone was very friendly and helpful."

"Yes, - it was an excellent conference. It was my third conference and this was the best run conference I have been to and the seminars were the most interesting. I had a hard time picking which seminar I wanted to go to. Other years - it was obvious which one of the three was for me but this year - I wanted to be in several places at one time!"

"AWESOME!! IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZER IN CANADA, YOU NEED TO BE THERE!"

"Definitely an excellent investment of time and expense. I have increased my knowledge, my motivation, my network of useful contacts."

"Wonderful conference. A great use of my time. Useful? Absolutely. Just makes me want more. Has already helped this week - and I did not expect results that soon. Every time I go to conference, it confirms that I am in the right business for me!"

"I was amazed at the community spirit, the wealth of advice, the inspirational moments and the great people I met. The conference far exceeded my expectations."

State of the Industry Address by POC President, Jane Woolsey

Organizing – the Time Is Here

Approximately Seven years ago, 7 determined and visionary people met in a living room.  Out of that meeting came the Professional Organizers in Canada association.

Today, as we approach 2007, the dynamic organization born that day boasts over 480 members and the Holiday Inn on King Street in downtown Toronto is a far cry from that living room.

It is an exciting privilege for me to honor the people whose imagination and hard work has made POC the vital force we are today and to build upon your achievements and Alex Fayle's leadership during the next year.
